Drawing on case studies and examples from different countries, it documents changes in the concept of media freedom, critically reflects on how media freedom is measured, and provides an updated overview of its current state, considering the impacts of evolving societal, political, commercial, legal, and information landscapes. Chapters explore the influence of digital technologies including the Internet, social media platforms and AI on the ability of political regimes to cast control over journalists and the autonomy that individual journalists experience in their daily practices, and scrutinise how political and economic forces as well as legislation and regulations shape media freedom.
